Newborn Photography

Updated: Apr 24

A newborn photoshoot is a special and memorable event for families, capturing the early moments of a baby’s life. To help parents get the most out of their newborn photoshoot, here are 10 tips for a perfect session:

1. Schedule the Newborn Photography Shoot Early

  • Best Timing: Newborns are typically best photographed within the first two weeks of life, as they sleep deeply and are more flexible for posed shots. Schedule the shoot while you’re still pregnant to ensure availability.

2. Choose the Right Time of Day

  • Avoid Fussy Times: The best time for a newborn session is typically in the morning. Ideally, a session should begin after a full feed when the baby is sleepy and calm, as this allows for better poses and less fussing. When you come into the studio, I may ask you to feed or if you have fed before coming, that is fine too. We will stop and feed back as needed.

3. Keep the Baby Comfortable

  • Temperature Control: Newborns are sensitive to temperature, so keep the room warm to ensure they are comfortable during the shoot. A cozy, warm environment helps keep the baby relaxed and sleeping.

  • Blankets & Posing: Soft, comfortable blankets and props will help keep the baby cozy while creating beautiful, natural photos.

4. Bring Essential Supplies

  • Diapers and Wipes: Have extra diapers and wipes on hand for quick changes. I also have these if you forget to bring them as well. Not to worry.

  • Feeding Supplies: If you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, be prepared for feeding breaks. Keeping baby calm and satisfied between shots is important. For mother's who are pumping, I encourage you to bring your supplies and pump as needed.

5. Simple & Classic Outfits

  • Neutral Colors: Opt for simple, neutral-colored outfits for family members. Avoid busy patterns that can distract from the baby’s face. Soft pastels, whites, and light neutrals work great for newborn sessions.

  • Bare Skin Poses: Consider wrapping the baby in soft fabrics or photographing them in their natural state, as these often produce timeless and intimate images.

6. Plan for Props and Backgrounds

  • Natural Props: Parker Photography has simple props like wooden baskets, soft blankets, hats, and small toys which can add a special touch without overwhelming the baby.

  • Clean Backgrounds: Make sure the backdrop is clean and uncluttered to allow the baby to be the focal point. Neutral-colored backgrounds or wooden floors often work well for a serene look.

7. Focus on Details - Newborn Photography

  • Close-ups: Don’t forget Parker Photography will capture those tiny, precious details—little fingers, toes, lips, and eyelashes. These close-up shots are timeless and incredibly meaningful for parents.

8. Keep the Baby Safe and Secure

  • Safety First: Always ensure the baby is securely positioned, especially during posed shots. If using props like baskets or bowls, make sure the baby is supported and never left unattended.

  • Comfort and Care: Take breaks as needed to soothe or feed the baby. A calm, comfortable baby will make for better photos.

9. Take Your Time

  • Patience is Key: Newborn sessions can take time, sometimes 2-3 hours, depending on how many breaks are needed for feeding, soothing, and changing. Allow plenty of time for each shot and let the session flow naturally to avoid stressing the baby or parents.

10. Incorporate Family Shots

  • Parents and Siblings: Highly recommend parents and siblings in the session. Simple, intimate shots of the baby with parents or siblings create meaningful family portraits that will be cherished for years to come. This is such a special time for everyone.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can help ensure a smooth, enjoyable, and successful newborn photoshoot that captures all the precious moments during your baby’s first few weeks.
